Fayetteville, North Carolina is the latest city to be added to the water quality issues list. the mayor recently was informed a chemical known as GenX has been getting dumped into the Cape Fear River since 1980. This river is part of the municipal drinking water source provided to the community. This is terrifying especially since it is unknown what the chemical can do to a person’s health and life long residents have been ingesting it for more than 30 years. So, the big question is, how can a chemical dump go on this long and nobody knows about it. The EPA didn’t require them to provide reports on the chemical so regardless of knowing what they were putting into the river, it wasn’t against the law so they just kept doing it. While the US has some of the safest municipal water sources in the world it can still leave you wondering what is in our water when chemicals like GenX and many more aren’t regulated or tested for.
“There are currently no federal drinking water standards for GenX. And because of an EPA rule, Chemours’ release of GenX into the Cape Fear River for nearly four decades may have been perfectly legal; that’s because it is a byproduct of another substance.”
